From Governor Richardson
Dear Friend,
There are just 5 hours left until the polls close here in New Hampshire and then I've got to get ready for Nevada, South Carolina -- and then the West.
There is a reason why there are so many contests in this process. So EVERY American from EVERY state can play a role in deciding our next President. Not just one or two states. The American people are too smart and this election is too important to let the early numbers determine the next 48!
Here in New Hampshire, people have been incredibly responsive to me and my vision for America.
Just yesterday The Keene Sentinel ran a terrific article where they interviewed some of the 200 folks who attended our rally in Keene on Sunday.
Here's what New Hampshire voters are saying:
Frank Dialessi of Keene said he plans to vote for Richardson, calling him the most qualified. "No one can dispute that," he said. "From all angles he's clearly the best candidate ... Richardson is the most highly qualified."
Keene High School teacher Jennifer White, holding Richardson signs at the corner of Roxbury Street and Central Square ahead of Sunday's rally, said it is Richardson's like-minded approach to education that appeals to her, and his pledge to scrap No Child Left Behind.
Keene voter Michael Chelstowski is drawn to Richardson, he said, because Richardson is saying more about the environment than any other candidate. "And that," he said, "is the long-term critical issue we face."
And Bob Jones of Nelson said: "He hit on the points I wanted to hear...Never in my adult life have I seen a situation where one person is going to have to handle so many important issues at once. I've been to New Mexico; I've seen the great job he's done in that state."
I've got to run. Keep your eyes on New Hampshire -- but look forward to the next leg of this race!

I'm afraid it's all downhill for Edwards here too. Unless he has a major comeback before Super Tuesday I'm going to have to join the Obama camp myself.
Let's not kid ourselves, Richardson is just stirring the pot from here on out. He has no chance of winning, not with a split convention, no-how. The decent thing to do would be to bow out, and if he still cares about who wins, to endorse a candidate.

I am disenchanted by the fact that you receive such little media coverage compared to the others. After such a thoughtful debate, they pegged you as the comic relief, and made no other comments, from what I heard. They minimize you way too much! On some of the stations tonight they didn't even show your returns. And Wolf Blitzer to whom I normally enjoy listening, made an off color remark about your disappointing 5% and how you should go back to NM to figure it out. (That makes me quite flustrated to say the least). I couldn't find any coverage of your campaign this evening after scouring all the stations. No wonder you're having so much of a hard challenge! If only more people recognized your positivity, experience, ability to communicate effectively your ideas, and likeability, you could really make a mark!!!!!!
Governor please do not give up!!!! I'm a young lady who loves your message, it resonates with me, even more than Obama's.

I also believe that Richardson can turn this thing around. As someone else posted he needs to WIN IN NEVADA so that there is NO questioning his viability out west. I know that it would not have benefited him all that much to campaign towards hispanics in the last two races and I am sure he will be doing this out west a lot more, but that will be his winning ticket out west.
I understand his philosophies and his character as far as campaigning ideals, but he really does need to get out and inspire people. He undoubtably has the experience, knowledge, and charisma to be president, but he needs to present all of this in a way that people will respond.
I know that it is a lot more than campaigning towards hispanics, but if he can inspire those hispanics that traditionally have not gone out to the polls as well as all other groups he will win.
I do agree that the national media favors only a couple of the "top tier" candidates and this is very frustrating. Somehow Richardson needs to make such an impact that they have no choice but to cover him. This brings it back to Nevada. If he can win in Nevada, which is still one of the early primary states, he can not be denied.
Maybe he needs to set up a news confernece or something that will get the attention of the media outlets and inspire people out west to get behind him. I am a Richardson supporter till the end, but bottom line he needs to step up and INSPIRE!

As long as someone pulling percentages lower than him is in the race then it's hard for the national media and clinton surrogates to pressure edwards to leave the race. When the party establishment goes to edwards pressuring him to leave the race knowing his kids will go home disillusioned before going to obama, his lunch box voters will likely go to hillary and the women who support him and public employee unions will break for hillary. No I don't want to see that happen but a hillary supporter would.
All edwards has to say is there are still people below me in this race. Richardson leaving would be bad for edwards. seriously his 5% tonight if they broke 100% for edwards would still leave edwards double digits behind obama.
The longer this is a 4 person race and multiple candidates are getting delegates the less chance this race has of being decided before our party convention in august. The less time the republican attack machine has to know which democrat they smear much as it isn't impossible we won't know who to attack until their convention.
I want Richardson to be my president but I also want the opportunity to send a message to the party establishment. There are tax cutting democrats, pro second amendment democrats, Democrats that are anxious to see their party reclaimed as champions of the people. Democrats that expect business to act responsibly but aren't adverse to rewarding them for doing so.
I will concede a Richardson victory was unlikely but I knew that before I gave my first dollar. however he has already changed the dynamic of the race. And the longer he hangs around the greater chance this primary gets decided at the convention.
And then as an alliance between Hillary and Obama seems unlikely it will be those that pulled core groups like edwards and richardson that get to choose the next democratic candidate for president. If RIchardson can grab enough delegates he might have to be part of that coalition getting to set a few party planks.
Richardson also now gets his opportunity to showcase western issues. He can talk about how the west exports transportation funds to the northeast particularly new york while people in California are forced to pass 30 billion in bonds to hold their own infrastructure together.
How western water infrastructure is stretched to the breaking point with no federal aid in sight as the northeast gobbles up infrastructure money.
Hillary is particularly vulnerable on these issues having fought to increase new yorks financial advantage in infrastructure funds vis a vis states like california who get back less than they put in. New york getting more money than any other state despite having less population and road miles and putting in less money.
Lets make sure we have a western democratic governor to raise western issues. I personally have been shocked that despite a bridge collapse infrastructure issues have yet to be moved forward.
Keep up the fight, there are more issues to raise and a battle at a convention to be fought. Besides you have nothing to lose. You've been a secretary an ambassador a congressman and a governor and could be senator for life from new mexico if you wanted. You're in this for your policy positions and they will fall by the wayside if none are around to raise them.
Clinton already backslid on iraq today saying win iraq the right way vs start leaving in 60 days as she said saturday. Richardsons voice cannot fall silent. This is a battle for the soul of our party and all the agents of change need to keep the battle going. It's time not just the nations status quo changed but our parties did.
To copy from a republican governor I greatly respect, "We want our party back." A contested convention isn't a bad way to hardwire change into our party.
I know you are the best person, of all the candidates, to change our country around.
My respects to you...please don't lose the faith.

The sentence should read, "I have seen your outstanding work as a Congressman and as a Governor."
And I am guilty of understating his experiences too - so it could be expanded to, "I have seen your outstanding work as a Congressman and as a Governor and as a diplomat and as a executive department head(Secretary of Energy)."
PS - I wish Bill had done better in Iowa, where I am from. But it is hard to compete against the campaigns of Clinton's, Edward's and Obama's when they have in effect been campaigning in IA for 16, 5, and 4 years respectively when Bill really only campaigned in IA for 6 months. But in Western states people are already familiar with Bill and probably not so familiar with the other candidates.
Richardson has the talent, he has the experience, he has the respect. He has what it takes to meet the challenges of our country and our world. We can't count on the Republicans to put some joker like Huckabee or Romney on their ticket. The Independents liked Obama in Iowa, but they went for McCain in New Hampshire.
If we don't stand behind Richardson, if we don't contribute, campaign, and bring him the nomination - WE ARE THE ONES THAT WILL LOOSE.
We need to get over the novelty of race and gender and come over to Richardson. We need Richardson because he is tough, fair, far-sighted, experienced, a fighter, a winner. We need Richardson because he is the best.
Everyone I spoke to at the caucuses in the Clinton and Obama campaigns said that they knew Richardson was more qualified - they were just riding the wave of the novelty whether race or gender. Honestly, it was like talking to a wall - But can either Clinton or Ombama win the White House in November against the experience of McCain? Not on your life. And it is our lives we are talking about. Our futures. Our peace. Our safety. Our country. Our world.

What I know is this: As a volunteer for Richardson, I heard him speak on numerous occasions, giving speeches at the Jefferson Jackson dinner and at his rally before the dinner, I heard him on the campaign trail, I spoke with him for a few minutes five or six times over the course of his Iowa campaign. After an event in Waterloo, I went over to say thanks and we chatted a minute. Before he left the room, he walked back over to me and and said "Thanks for all you are doing." You need to understand the pace of these events and the pressure to be on the road - at that point - to get to the airport - and get to the next event. But he took the time to find me again and make sure to say he appreciated my efforts. At another event, in Waterloo he recognized that I was one of his volunteers and asked if I could attend and help out at events in Oelwein and Independence - small towns near by. So, I did. I was wiped out by the end of the Indepedence event, but he had a few more house parties to attend in Cedar Rapids. He joked with me about going along for those too! His way of thanking volunteers is to ask them to do more - and actually it works, he respects the time and effort we put in and makes connections so that we feel comfortable in the roles we take on. (I didn't go on, but did go back to the Waterloo campaign office and make some calls, review my roladex for people I hadn't talked to yet.) His field office people were great at focusing our efforts.
He is a man who works for the people and needs our best grassroots efforts to sustain his campaign. Everyone can do something. Everyone can talk to one person in some context.
I was really shy about doing this, but in taking with other people would key off something he said. Like in the last debate - ask the people you see if they are following the race, did they see the debate, what did they think of Richardson's comment on the negative attackes. Take his comment about hostage negotiations and make sure people know he has walked the walk - he rescued John Early from an armed camp in the Sudan.
I heard Early speak about his capture when he was a pilot in Africa for the Red Cross and how Richardson was the only person who came to help and got him and his people out alive at the Jefferson Jackson rally. I googled newspaper accounts from the Washington Post and e-mailed those to other people. It was very impressive thing for anyone to have done. Go in unarmed and walk out with his fellow American.
He brought the remains of soldiers back from North Korea. Above all else, he is a decent man. He met with the family - he went to the funeral of Clem Boody rather than participate in the NPR debate. His commitment to veterans is a matter of record and is phenomenal.
I have met people from his campaign in Iowa that all have videos in the multimedia part of the Richardson web-site. Watch those!! Those are people I met, real people who know the Governor and have worked with him. Listen to what they have to say, pick one and forward to someone you know who would be interested in knowing that information about the Governor.
Don't let this chance pass you by. Be part of the campaign!! As Barbara Richardson told us on several occasion, "You will never regret your support of my husband, Bill Richardson." She said something else that has stuck with me, "Never count him out, I've seen him do incredible things."
Richardson will not leave this race because he knows that the Democrats need a viable, electable candidate in the Fall. He will not leave this race because he knows his country needs him. He will not leave this race because he knows he is the one that can lead our country. He will not leave this race because he knows it will come down to him in the end and he will be there, ready, willing and able to serve the American people.
Richardson will not abandon his party or his people because he knows that he is the one with the talent, experience, and courage to lead our nation. Richardson will not abandon a cause he believes in. Richardson will not abandon Americans held captive by hostile factions, held captive by foreign nations, or held captive by the glitter of stardom.
Richardson loves this country. He loves the people of this country; he loves the potential of this country, he loves the beauty of America and Americans.
Richardson believes in this country. He believes in the Constitution, he believes in the Bill of Rights, he believes in the rule of law, he believes no one is above the law.
He believes in the goodness of America, he will restore our name among the nations.
Richardson will work for this country. He will work to bring good jobs to people. He will work for a clean environment. He will work to bring our military personnel home. He will work for healthcare. He will work for students, he will work for teachers, he will work for labor, he will work for business, he will work for a better America for all of us.
Richardson will stay the course. He will fight the good fight. He will prove to America he is the best person to be president.
How do I know this? How can I speak with such certainty - because I have learned about what he has already done. I have checked his record and his references. I have seen him talk to people in Iowa. I have seen how he respects the teachers, the veterans, the mothers of servicemen, the baseball fanatics, the train devotees, how he respects each individual he meets. I have seen the dedication of the people who know him personally, who left family and jobs to come out and campaign for him. How do I know this - because I have met him, seen him, had my questions answered. There is no doubt. He is the one we need to work for. He is the one we need working for us.
The question is: are you ready to help him? Are you ready to do your part in bringing his message to your friends, neighbors and co-workers? Do you have the courage of your convictions? The three little words we need to remember is: Yes, we can!!
I volunteered for his campaign in Iowa, and will continue until the results are counted in November. I am a lawyer with a small practice here in Waterloo, Iowa and I tell you - after seeing everyone else - I am committed to Richarson and his campaign. I can only hope to have his level of integrity, honor and dedication to my chosen profession as he has to the American people. Kathy Mahoney
And if you don't get the nomination, please consider the VP if asked. it would give you the name recognition you would need to lead our country 8 years from now, and it would give the candidate that gets the nom. someone who can be the diplomat that our country needs.
bill richardson, the next administration needs you one way or another, please don't abandon us!
So, I'm asking all of you who believe in Richardson to email your friends and family -- in your state and across the country -- to enlighten them and pursuade them to vote for Richardson.
This election (and this country) is too important to sit by and do nothing.
We Iowans need to give support and encouragement to Nevada and any other caucus state. Unless you have been through it, you have no idea what a mess it is with huge voter turnout and few people from the party to organize the event. Thank you for continuing to support the Governor. I just got off the telephone after speaking to Andrew at the New Mexico headquarters . . . I have e-mailed in a $200 contribution (scraped it together as things are tight for us right now). . . an investment in our country and making our country work for our children. He said many people are calling in with contributions today . . . join me in contributing. Bill Richardson is the only candidate that has the wisdom, skill and proven experience to right the ship . . . America needs Bill Richardson at the helm not 1st mate!
I also talked with a representative from the Nevada office a few minutes ago, who has traveled from Virginia to volunteer. They are signing me up to make phone calls to Nevadans. I am a Republican in Orange County, California and believe passionately about Bill Richardson's candidacy. No, I am not switching parties but plan on voting for him in the General Election!! Democrate, Republicans and Independents, we need to come together and stand with Bill Richardson . . . he is a candidate of the people, by the people and for the people like no other.
Ask yourself what you can do to help TODAY . . . send money, any increment, contact the media/networks and write articles for your local paper, e-mail/contact 50 friends of all voting ages and follow-up with another call within 24 hours to talk about Bill Richardson's qualifications . . . he is who we need to lead this country and bring change! We have the power as Americans so stand up and be counted . . . most of all, when you can, cast your vote for Bill Richardson!
If we all vote, one by one, he will be the next President of the United States. Don't hesitate, don't just talk about it, stand up and be counted!

You should stay IN the race through at least Nevada, and focus all your efforts on trying to come in the top two or three in that state. Edwards is worrying about S. Carolina, so you should be able to do well in Nevada and you already have support and an on-going operation there.
You are the best candidate to go up against a McCain if he is the Republican nominee.

The Richardson Factor in Nevada
I'm going to get into this a bit in my upcoming print piece, but it's worth considering that Nevada is, like Iowa, a caucus state, where organization tends to be rewarded and where, as Obama campaign manager David Plouffe argues, his team is incredibly well-organized. (Though I've heard that team Clinton has a solid organization there, too.)
Another thing to keep in mind about Nevada: Everyone talks about the importance of the culinary workers endorsement, which Obama just received. Also important is the fact that Bill Richardson plans to fight on there, and may therefore take some of the state's Hispanic vote out of play. (When things were looking grim for Hillary this weekend, you heard a lot about her Hispanic firewell. But surely Richardson, the Hispanic governor of a nearby stage, is going to have something to say about that.)

Do not forget that a large portion of the members of UNITE HERE in Nevada are hispanic. And their Culinary Union almost single.handedly handed Nevada over to Kerry in 2004 ( the DemPArty arrived only about two weeks before the elections- the union had been basicaly going it alone, with the support of the smaller SEIU Nevada branch. So, if, as is seems, this Union really gets to work for Obama following their endorsement, there are going to be a lot of Hispanics out campaigning for Obama. Since the union is very highly respected in the State, Richardson might not have such an easy time of it. No doubt about it - this endorsement seems very important for Obama's chances in the state.
It is way too early to do anything.

Anyway I'd like to thank Richardson for running a good campaign and for quitting before it became belabored. He's already done what he could do alter the discourse for this cycle. Now it would just be nice if he would get out the vote for Edwards. Or Obama if it's too late for him.
I think a Edwards/Richardson ticket would be good although I am not sure Edwards can make it without media coverage.

Responding to the blogger who seems to be an Edwards supporter . . . As far as Edwards, or Obama, for that mattter, my hope is that Governor Richardson does not throw his support anywhere, yet. Let the political game play out. Edwards is not presidential material and is only a master at creating courtroom drama at the debates and Obama is all fluff and no meat . . . this voter will be looking elsewhere. We need a visionary with experience that brings everyone together. I'll weigh out my options come November.

Romney has broken the law of flip flop to much apparently as he's way off breaking my rule of shooting mouth off into foot. Huckabee has been geting great coverage percent since about october november climbing in as the religious man but overall even coverage = wide open race.
Their lack of even coverage of candidates is all of our loss.
It's not what they say as much as exposure.
Go to cnn.com and look at the Career tabs for the candidates: Link It is shockingly clear to me who should be our next president if experience is the key factor. It clearly can't be. Money and popularity will win the day.
My question for Richardson and his campaign staff: why didn't most voters see his clear advantage? Was it lack of money, as I said above, to get the word out?
If I have to choose between Obama and Hillary in the meaningless Pennsylvania primary, it will be Obama. I hope that Richardson gets a shot at running with Obama as the Vice President. Also, with Richardson out, if McCain rises to the top of the Republican pile, I may have to go over the wall for him as the only candidate with significant experience left in the race. McCain/Richardson...that would be cool.
You know, if I had money I would give it to you, but I live on $1K per month and I can barely make it as it is. I know that you have the best plans for America. I know it in my heart and I know it in my mind.
You can get us out of Iraq. You can fix the foreign policy messes we're in. You can balance the budget. You can roll back emissions and drive up mpg. You can create jobs. OMG, I can't list all the wonderful things you can do for America.
Please don't give up!

They never took him seriously enough and they never covered him intricately enough as they did the others.
I am quite disappointed in the coverage: even today, as Governor Richardson's staff was announcing his departure, the reporters talked over a majority of it, CNN started talking over Governor Richardson, and even MSNBC-Live, who seemed to have covered the speech the longest,
dropped out way before the Governor was even finished. I was sitting there, in tears as I am sure many of you were as well---as they cut the Governor off, mercilessly, in favor of whether Bloomberg will run or not? And Britney Spears' family being outraged by Dr. Phil? And how cute
English Bulldog Puppies are? Give me a break!!
No wonder the Governor did not stand a fighting chance. (I even called MSNBC to complain).
Sorry I could not afford to donate....I donated my poem...I watched the campaign from the beginning..I am kicking myself because I know I could have done more. I had written a song for Senator Kerry in '04 that got national airplay. I sang a song for Al Gore that was even broadcast on MSNBC Live, the show I am upset with today!!

I am deeply saddened that you have brought your presidential campaign to an end, but I am also confident that you will continue to fight for these issues in New Mexico, as well as continuing to pressure the Congress to take the bold action that we all know is required to move our nation forward.
Though you have stated on CNN and elsewhere that you would not accept the Vice Presidential slot if asked I hope that, if you are approached, that you would consider the offer. The relative novices that are left in the race could all benefit from your experience, and wisdom.
On a more personal note, your campaign gave me the ability to put faith in a candidate for the first time in my life. Having been born into the height of Vietnam, and witnessing the lies and excesses of the Reagan/Bush/Bush II years it was heartening to at last find a campaign that I truly believed in; one that was not pushing the lesser of two evils.
Thank you again Governor, not just for this campaign, but for all your years of service to our country, and your continued service in the future.

Yesterday I used the "Early Voting" option in my part of California to cast my vote for you. Yes, I know that you've officially dropped out of the race. However, I still believe that you are not only the most qualified candidate, but that you are the only candidate that I would trust in the White House. The other candidates have messages which are too "packaged" or too narrow or just not consistent with their past actions. Please keep pressing for the kind of experience leadership you would provide. We need it.
Well unless he retracts that statement immediately in this fast paced election, for this Hillary Clinton supporter who for party unity and so did not want more Bush Whitehouse years made that statement true is now here by giving notice that it is no longer true. If I do not hear not only a retraction of this statement and a encouragement by Barack Obama for his supporters to vote Democrat no matter who ends up getting the nod as the Democratic nominee I will be setting out this election if Obama wins the nominee! He went way to far! If he waits till the convention to get all unity mode it will be to late for me! Lets see if Barack Obama wins any better without the support of the Hillary Clinton supporter then Hillary would without the support of the Barack supporters!
