Opinion Piece- Are we better off now than 8 years ago?
Every four years, we the American People ask ourselves are we better off.? This is a part of our history, and the American Political Process. This election, is no different from any other, accept that the old threats of the cold war between the US and Russia which no longer exist, put us into further danger as smaller nations that are unstable enter the nuclear club, since the breakdown of hegemony maintained by the superpowers controls on proliferation ..
Years of ill thought out diplomacy and nuclear proliferation among politically and religiously unstable theocracies place us nearer to nuclear holocaust and thus our ultimate extinction as a species on this planet. President Bush had eight years to leave his mark on our society and ultimately the globe. He has utterly failed as a world leader in making us safer.
Pakistan and India, with its nuclear arsenals, poised to attack each other maintains a launch on warning status, while religious and theoretical elements of their respective societies call for each other's destruction. Led by religious ideology and the presence of al Qaida, in an unstable political system, with lack of real protection for its arsenal in Pakistan, is causing fear of the nuclear umbrella that we all lived under due to terrorist elements. Iran, led by the mullahs with the promise of eliminating the state of Israel and anyone who opposes their desire for nuclear self determination and thus further spreading the nuclear threat globally.
Hollywood is once again producing films reminding us of this fear. As a child, I once feared the emergency broadcast system announcing an impending attack and mushroom clouds over our major cities, and now these same nightmares return, but this time for our children. There is still time to end this nightmare, but we need the commitment of world leaders, and a leader who has experience. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has a proven track record when it comes to negotiations and bridging gaps. In North Korea, he got Kim Jung Ill, a paranoid dictator to agree to stop production and open up his facilities to IAEA inspectors. I challenge the American people to have the insight to elect this man as President. We need to break down the ideology and barriers. While we all have different faiths and belief systems, he has dedicated himself to a lifetime of public service and as a citizen of this world; I think tolerance can be learned. Otherwise, we will face Armageddon but this will be of our own making. President Bush squandered good will after 911, and made the world a dangerous place in the face of its dictators. The solutions are not easy, and are hard. However, we can get rid of this threat and use the atom for peaceful purposes. Global warming will be the least of our worries if the missiles fly and terrorist are allowed to slip bombs into nations.
