Very Frustrating Performance

Wow, what a HORRIBLE showing at the LOGO debate for Bill Richardson. I am officially withdrawing my support due to the fact that our country needs a candidate who understands issues of civil rights and civil liberties--and can discuss the issues with courage and integrity. That's not Bill Richardson.

I'm With Ya

I'm with you. I'm no longer support Richardson either. I was totally appalled by how things went down last night.

I'm gone too

Gov. Richardson's inability to communicate his civil liberty positions and/or his appalling ignorance on these critical issues, in my mind, leave him unqualified for the Presidency. With some regret, I can no longer lend support to his campaign.

Don't throw stones.

I don't think his performance was horrible. I am grateful to him for coming. I think his answers were honest. I look at his record in New Mexico and it is very solid. I appreciate what he said. And, I agree with him. We have to pursue what we can. I am gay, and I was appalled at how he was treated last night and how he has been treated elsewhere since. I hope that Bill doesn't feel that the whole LGBT community agrees with what has been said about him, or with how the questions and debate were presented. We have such big problems to overcome in so many areas for the next campaign. We have completely decimated our international relationships and goodwill. We have so much to tackle. Equality for every human being is a good thing to pursue, and I think that pursuing it in a way that we can actually achieve it is something worth doing. This man is smart, give honest, pragmatic answers, and I believe he really could be an asset to this country.

Clinton threw the LGBT community that helped elect him under the bus after he go elected, it looks like Gov. Richardson is willing to do it before he gets elected. We have been compromising our entire lives, we need a President who is willing to fight for what is right, even if 60% of the population is against it right now, need an example, look at the civil rights movement of the '60s.

Thank you to the User from Pittsburgh, PA for your comment. One reason I like Bill Richardson, apart from his stands on the issues and his broad experience, is the fact that he seems much more honest and unscripted than the usual politician. I feel like I get a better picture of who he is and his approach to the issues, than I do with most slick, highly polished candidates. He is a realist, a consensus-builder, who has accomplished things by steadily, diplomatically, working toward a goal. He is pragmatic, but compassionate at the same time. He understands discrimination on a personal level.

I hope that no one judges Bill on an answer or two that he gave last night. His record is what counts. With our country's current diminished standing in the world, and our broad spectrum of problems at home, he is the exactly the type of leader we need right now.

I agree with the idea that we shouldn't judge a candidate (or a person in general) by a few words that he/she may utter. I think Gov. Richardson was right to say that we should focus on actions--not on words. However, his inability to engage in the proper discourse reflective of a culturally competent and culturally sensitive leader is a definite red flag.

In regards to my withdrawal from supporting this campaign, for me, this was not an impulsive decision. This was the final straw--I have tried too often to justify his gaffes to myself and others throughout these debates. And simply put, he does not exhibit the type of composure or poise of an ideal President. Maybe in 2004, I would let these things slip, but this year, with a strengthened pack of candidates and far better choices, Richardson just doesn't make the cut. I do regret it, and I wish I could support him . . . but I will not. And I would venture to guess that other critical thinkers who have already decided to back away from Richardson feel the same way.

Finally, a President needs to be strong in his actions AND his words. He should accomplish tasks and create change, but he also needs to motivate the people to actually make these changes. And as an English teacher, I stress the importance of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I even noticed grammatical errors on his Education position paper distributed to me at the last Arizona for Richardson meeting. That is simply unacceptable.

We need a role model. We can't have a(nother) President who cannot articulate intellectual thoughts. How can Richardson even take credit for performing all of his accomplishents as an executive, when he does not even understand common-sense concepts and questions? I see how people are attempting--as usual--to spin this detrimental error now. But forget it--after living under an abusive system for the past eight years, we won't be fooled this time.

It is obvious--Richardson is done.
